FULTON, NY – The public will have the opportunity to air its opinion tonight during a public hearing on the Fulton city school’s proposed $23.7 million capital project.
The project — which encompasses improvements at all school district buildings for student safety, security upgrades, energy efficiency, technology, accessibility for disabled individuals, heating, food service and athletic facilities — is set to go before the voters in a referendum Dec. 12.
According to school officials, state building aid and the district’s capital reserve fund are expected to cover nearly 100 percent of the improvement project.
“The reason we say that state aid and our district capital reserve will cover nearly 100 percent is because the state will make a final determination of aid only after the project is approved by voters,” Superintendent Bill Lynch said in a press release issued earlier this month.
“When approved, the state education department will make a final determination on aid that could possibly result in a small percentage (1-3 percent) covered by local taxpayers over 15 years,” Lynch said. “If it’s 3 percent, the tax effect on a $70,000 home would be $4.97 a year for 15 years (41¢ per month).
Residents with a STAR exemption or an enhanced STAR exemption could expect a lower cost.
A brochure detailing the major items for all buildings was developed to inform district residents. Information has also been made available through the media, on the district’s Web site, http://www.fulton.cnyric.org, in each school building and through local presentations.
The public hearing is scheduled to begin at 7 pm., at G. Ray Bodley High School.
