Mexico High Official: Fire Was Minor, Students Return Monday

Note: This story has been modified to include updates from Mexico High School assistant principal Chris Plath.

MEXICO, NY – Students were temporarily evacuated at Mexico High School this morning when a grease fire started in a classroom at the building.

According to a spokesperson at Oswego County E-911, the fire was reported as a grease fire in the Home and Careers classroom at 8:20 a.m.

“It was a grease fire, not a structure fire,” the spokesperson noted.

Students were evacuated and the Mexico Fire Department was called to the scene. No injuries were reported.

The fire was out within minutes of the report. Because of the temperatures this morning, students were brought into the gymnasium once the fire was out, according to a student at the school.

Students were subsequently dismissed for the day at 10:30 a.m., as a precaution, according to assistant principal Chris Plath.

“The fire was not very big but there was a smell,” Plath said.

Plath explained that the decision was to send kids home as a precaution to prevent any problems with students who have breathing problems, allergies or asthma.

“Everything went very well,” she noted. “The kids were phenomenal. The teachers were great and very helpful.”

Plath said that the custodial staff will clean the building to prepare for next week.

“I don’t see any problem with students returning Monday,” she said.
