FULTON, NY – Gypsy Red, a progressive folk band from Syracuse with over 80 original songs to their credit, will perform live on June 7 during the Step by Step Clubhouse’s Art & Wellness Festival in Fulton.
The music of Gypsy Red chronicles the endless journey of the spirit, ever seeking its way home.
Spirit breaks free with guitarist John Sardella’s enchanting refrains on his melodic 12 string acoustic guitar.
The music spirals and soars with passionate jubilation through the expressive heartfelt voice of lead vocalist Cherie Sardella.
The unique blend creates a spirited folk sound that is a fusion of ageless wisdom and culture in a modern context.
Many different local musicians who add their own unique touch to the songs often join the duo including Cherie’s oldest son, Karl Lavaway, who plays both saxophone and bass guitar.
Gypsy Red formed more than 10 years ago when Cherie asked John to put to music a poem that she had written.
Since then, they have played at festivals, coffeehouses, and cultural events throughout New York and Canada appearing with artists such as Joanne Shenandoah, Bill Miller, Keith Secola, Ulali, Richie Havens, and Jamie Notarthomas.
In May of 1999, Gypsy Red released its first full-length CD recording, titled Infinite Journey.
The work includes songs such as “10,000 People,” “Nostradamus,” and “The Journey,” all of which capture the unique style of this group and what it shares.
Its second work titled Coming Home, was released October of 2001.
This piece includes many of the group’s most intimate songs such as “Home,” “Light In Your Eyes,” and “Rain,” all of which express the heartfelt emotions of life experiences.
The band refers to itself as a diverse, open-minded, wholehearted group who express its love of the earth and everything on it in its music.
Gypsy Red delights in playing where independent music will be enjoyed.
Gypsy Red, who serves as the host band for the Art & Wellness Festival, will perform at 11 a.m. on June 7 in Voorhees Park.
The Step By Step Clubhouse Art & Wellness Festival will showcase the talents and abilities of people recovering from mental illness.
Performances and demonstrations from artists who support the efforts of the Clubhouse will also highlight the event as the Art & Wellness Festival uses the Arts to help dispel the misconception of mental illness and the social stigma of being labeled with a psychiatric disability.
