Pennellville Man Killed in Crash in Onondaga County

From the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department

Town of Clay, New York – Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin E. Walsh reports that deputies are investigating a one-car crash that claimed the life of a Pennellville man.

Saturday night at approximately 11:15 p.m., sheriff’s deputies responded to a single car crash that claimed the life of Brent Varney, 21, of 680 County Route 10, lot 39. Deputies investigating the crash report that Varney was driving a 2001 Ford Explorer and traveling north on Morgan Road when he apparently drifted into the southbound lane and then off the west side of the roadway before crashing into a utility pole at the intersection of Oak Orchard Road.

A passing motorist discovered the heavily damaged SUV and immediately called for police. Rescue crews arriving at the scene raced to free Varney from the wreckage. Varney sustained multiple injuries and was transported by ambulance to University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Members of the Sheriff’s Accident Investigation Team were called to conduct a complete investigation and will rely on a final autopsy to help determine the cause of the crash. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
