A small plane crashed in the town of Palermo Sunday afternoon.
The crash happened at around 3:30 p.m. near 1988 County Route 45, Palermo.
Photographer Rick Grosvent, who shot the photos and videos that accompany this story, said two women were on the plane.
The pilot suffered leg and chest injuries and was flown by helicopter to the hospital. The passenger appeared to suffer less serious injuries, he said.
Police identify the two as Frances Englund and Nancy Beck. NewsChannel 9 reports the two were flying back to the Williamson-Sodus Airport in Wayne County when their plane crashed. Channel 9 reports the plane sent a distress signal to the Hancock Airport control tower shortly before the crash.
Englund remains in University Hospital in Syracuse in serious condition. Beck was treated at the hospital and released.
Police confirm that the plane simply ran out of fuel on its flight across the state.
Rescuers had to cut the front of the plane away to remove the pilot.
He noted that the crash appeared to produce no fire or explosion.
