Scout Creates New Bridges at Great Bear

FULTON, NY – Andrew Litteer, a member of Boy Scout Troop 203, is working towards his for Eagle Scout Badge.

He recently designed and installed with crew, a set of plank bridges at Great Bear Recreational Area.

The bridges connect the historical Oswego River Canal Tow Path across a muddy section to an island area having a trail around its perimeter.

Andrew organized a work party made up of members of Troop 203, friends, and members of Friends of Great Bear.

Two 12-foot bridges and a 30-foot bridge were constructed on site.

Because of the approximate mile distance to the site, lumber and materials were transported by canoes through the old canal and the work crew helped carry tools to site, by tow path.

The new bridge section helps protect the surrounding flora and allows for four season use of the tow path and trail system on the island.
