State Police Investigate Fatal Car/Pedestrian Crash in Brewerton

On May 13, at 9:26 p.m., the New York State Police responded to a car – pedestrian motor vehicle collision that occurred in front of the Brewerton Speedway located at 60 US Route 11 in the town of Hastings.

The investigation revealed that George Lopes, 74, from Central Square, was walking across the street when he stepped into the southbound lane in front of a vehicle.

The operator of the vehicle, Kaitlin Johnson, 19, from Central Square attempted to swerve away but was unable to avoid striking Lopes with her vehicle, police said.

Lopes was transported by Brewerton Ambulance to Upstate University Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Johnson was found to have a suspended driver license and was processed for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle 3rd at the scene, according to the police report.
