Sunshine Center Opens its Doors to the Community

After many hours of “hardcore repairs,” new carpets, and tearing down old wallpaper in favor of paint, the Sunshine Community and Childcare Center held its open house on Sunday.

“It feels so wonderful to be sunshiny and happy,” said Renee Szabo.

Sunshine will be open for drop-in childcare on July 8 and the fulltime daycare program will begin in August.

“I think we have a great opening,” said Szabo. “Word of mouth is definitely going to get us going.”

The Sunshine Community and Childcare Center is located on Schuyler Street in the former Red’s Videos storefront.

It’s the brainchild of Jessica Naioti, inspired by the trouble she had finding reliable childcare for her son, Benjamin.

Her hope is that Sunshine becomes the place kids want to be in Fulton, and will tell their friends about.

“I’m grateful,” said Naioti. “It seems like a lot of people suited up and showed up and it’s working out beautiful.”

Aside from childcare, Sunshine also plans to operate a youth group for teens ages 13-17.

The group will meet on Wednesday nights and create its own rules and bylaws. The plan is for the youth group to hold events on Friday nights.

Szabo’s daughter, Sarah, will be the initial “idea person” of the youth group.

“I’m still thinking!” said Sarah. “There’s a lot to do. I don’t want it to be just up to me. I want everybody’s decision in it in the long run.”

Sunshine is also still searching for members for its board of directors.

Joining the board involves a minimum donation of $100 and attendance at meetings on the last Sunday of every month.

“So many people have worked on this,” said Naioti. “This center is a long time coming and I’m so honored and blessed to be part of it.” missing or outdated ad config
