Valley News, Patriot Sold To Syracuse-based Chain

The company that owns The Valley News and the Fulton Patriot has sold the publications to the company that prints the two newspapers.

Vincent and Ronald Caravan, the father and son team that operated the publications (and the Valley News Advertiser, a weekly shopper) for 38 years turned over the keys last week to the Scotsman Press, Syracuse-based owner of 18 publications throughout Central New York.  That includes a Pennysaver edition for Fulton.

Scotsman Press has printed the Valley News and Patriot for many years.

Ronald Caravan said in a statement published in the Valley News:

“For various personal reasons, the timing was right for us to retire from the responsibilities of publishing the community papers,” Ronald Caravan said. “When the opportunity arose recently to sell our interest to Scotsman, we felt a strong sense of confirmation that this was the right move at the right time. We have enjoyed a long and positive relationship with Scotsman and are confident they will sustain the tradition of The Valley News as the greater Fulton area’s primary community-news source.”

Scotsman Press associate publisher Tom Cuskey told Lou Sorendo of Oswego County Business Magazine that no immediate changes are planned.

“[T]he last thing we want to do is come in and change something that has been a winning combination of papers for this community for many years.”

Cuskey said The Valley News will continue to be published twice weekly, on Wednesday and Saturday.

“For the foreseeable future, we aren’t planning any changes” insofar as publication dates are concerned, Cuskey noted.

“That’s not to say that three years from now, the economy and market dictate that a change needs to be made.”

26 employees at the publications have retained their jobs.

The change marks the first time in more than 50 years that Vincent Caravan has not been part of the Valley News and will end decades of local, independent ownership of the publications. missing or outdated ad config

  1. Vince, I remember you well, as Mom worked for you, next to Howard’s Garage. Just down the street from our house on Erie Street. You and Ron deserve a break and a job well done over the years!!!
