The Fulton City School District is moving quickly towards a likely December vote on a building project to finish some work not done in two other recent projects.
Superintendent of Schools Bill Lynch reviewed a tentative timeline with the board Tuesday night. The board will be asked to approve the project at its next meeting, in two weeks. The information campaign for the project would cover the month of November, with a public hearing tentatively set for December 5 and a vote a week later.
The project would upgrade the technology infrastructure at Volney and Fairgrieve elementary schools, and repair roofs at Fairgrieve and G. Ray Bodley High School. Some asbestos would also be removed from Fairgrieve.
Officials have explained that the technology wiring at Volney and Fairgrieve is not sufficient to keep up with the technology upgrades throughout the district.
The roof repair work had been scheduled to take place during recent construction projects, but had to be dropped as higher-priority items needed more money.
The initial estimate of the cost of the project was $8.1 million. The amount fits under the state’s legal debt limit for the district. State aid would pick up most of the cost of the project.
If the project is approved by voters, the district would spend all of 2013 working with its architect and construction firm to prepare the project and win state approval.
Construction would begin in the spring of 2014 at Volney and in the summer of 2014 at Fairgrieve and the high school. The roof work at the high school would be finished that summer, while work at the elementary schools would continue until the spring of 2015.
