OSWEGO COUNTY – Oswego County Department of Social Services (DSS) staff are taking new steps to strengthen relations with school districts county-wide. Members of DSS’ Child Protective Services Unit and Preventive Services Unit met with superintendents to discuss school needs and how the partners can come together to address concerns.
“This initiative is part of an effort to improve the relationship and foster collaboration between DSS and our school districts,” said Oswego County DSS Commissioner Lee Sullivan. “We have met with the superintendents of all nine Oswego County school districts and were able to have great conversations about the issues of concern to schools and brainstorm on what else DSS can do to support students and their families.
“The superintendents were very welcoming and the feedback they provided is invaluable,” continued Sullivan. “We plan to continue these meetings on a quarterly basis, and I’m optimistic they will continue to be beneficial to both our agency and the school districts, as we are all invested in protecting the children in our care.”
Oswego County DSS Director of Services Sara Finley organized the meetings with superintendents prior to Commissioner Sullivan’s appointment in July.
“We have a school collaboration guide within each district, and school staff have always been able to reach out to us when they have concerns or escalate a call if needed,” said Finley. “We’re happy to have met face-to-face with school employees so that they know who we are and who to contact if an issue occurs. Increasing communication between DSS staff and our school districts will help further ensure the safety of our children.”
The Oswego County Department of Social Services is dedicated to strengthening families, assuring safety, promoting self-sufficiency and improving the quality of life throughout the county.
