WASHINGTON – Following the events that unfolded in the nation’s Capitol Building yesterday, January 6, local officials have spoken out against the storming of the building in the attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 Presidential election.

Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow:

“The actions yesterday by rioters at the Capitol building in Washington D.C. are a direct attack on our Democratic Republic and [are] absolutely despicable. Those who damaged the Capitol building, government property, and assaulted others should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. To think our sitting President directly instigated this behavior during his rally beforehand makes it worse, and is reprehensible. No person who considers themselves an American can support or justify what took place. We are so much better than this,” Barlow said.

Fulton Mayor Deana Michaels:

Declined to comment.

NY State Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay (R,C,I Pulaski):

“The situation unfolding in Washington D.C. is nothing short of tragic. What we’ve witnessed today has no place in our country and should be condemned by anyone who considers themself a true American. Protests have always been part of political discourse, but the events at the Capitol have crossed every line imaginable. As a nation, we are better than this – and we need to show it immediately,” Barclay said.

NY Governor Andrew Cuomo:

“The cornerstone of our democracy is the peaceful transfer of power. We must call this what it actually is: a failed attempt at a coup. This is the final chapter of an incompetent, cruel, and divisive administration that has trampled on the Constitution and the rule of law at every turn, and we won’t let President Trump, the members of Congress who enable him, or the lawless mob that stormed our nation’s Capitol steal our democracy. The election results are clear and the will of the American people will be carried out,” Cuomo said.

U.S. Representative John Katko (R, NY 24):

“I am grateful to all of those who have reached out regarding my safety today. The support and concern expressed is humbling. I am in a safe location.

“The attack on the U.S. Capitol is shameful and completely unacceptable. It has endangered the lives of our law enforcement and countless others. This is anything but a peaceful protest. The violence must stop immediately. President Trump must take a more forceful stand to end this, now.”

“I am praying for a peaceful conclusion. We are a strong country. We will recover from this and we certainly must learn from it,” Katko said.

U.S. Senator/Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D, NY):

“What happened at the U.S. Capitol yesterday was an insurrection against the United States, incited by the president. This president should not hold office one day longer.

“The quickest and most effective way – it can be done today – to remove this president from office would be for the Vice President to immediately invoke the 25th amendment. If the Vice President and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress should reconvene to impeach the president,” Schumer said.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D, NY):

“My staff and I are safe and currently in lockdown. The storming of the U.S. Capitol is a stain on American democracy. Make no mistake—this disgraceful violence will not stop the inauguration of Joe Biden on January 20,” Gillibrand said.
