OSWEGO COUNTY- In celebration of May as National Older Americans Month, the Oswego County Office for the Aging (OFA) has selected Harold Wert, Sue Wert and Father George Wurz as its 2024 Seniors of the Year. The award serves to recognize seniors for their contributions to their communities.

“We’re thrilled to announce our 2024 Oswego County Seniors of the Year as part of our celebration of National Older Americans Month,” said OFA Director Sara Sunday. “The theme for this year’s Older Americans Month is ‘Powered by Connection,’ and each of our Seniors of the Year have certainly remained connected to their communities throughout their years of dedicated volunteerism. We’re so excited to celebrate these individuals and give them the recognition that they deserve.”

Harold and Sue Wert have both been volunteers for more than 20 years. The couple volunteer as drivers for the OFA’s Home Delivered Meals program, and Mrs. Wert has also served on the Parish Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

Father George Wurz has been active in his community since his posting to St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in 1982, volunteering for more than three decades. He has volunteered at various organizations, including the Legion of Mary, the Knights of Columbus, and as the Oswego County Jail Ministry Chaplin.

The Seniors of the Year were presented with a proclamation by the Oswego County Legislature in recognition of their volunteerism at the May legislative meeting. They were also celebrated by the New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) at a recognition ceremony at The Egg at the Empire State Plaza in Albany.

Each year, the NYSOFA requests nominations of seniors in recognition of their volunteer work and service to their communities. Oswego County OFA extends the request to county citizens and a committee appointed by OFA’s advisory council makes the selection. To be eligible, nominees must be age 60 or over and be active volunteers.
