Oswego County Shares Unofficial Results From 2023 General Election

OSWEGO COUNTY – The unofficial results from this year’s midterm election have been released by the Oswego County Board of Elections.

These unofficial results from the election held on Tuesday, November 7 include early voting and votes cast on Election Day. Absentee ballots have yet to be counted. New York State Election Law required a “complete recanvass” of all votes cast before elections can be certified. This usually takes 25 days for a general election.

One of the more heated races has been for Fulton City Mayor. As of the end of Election Day on Tuesday night, James Rice’s (DEM, Common Ground) 989 votes leads the race by 73. Narrowly behind him is Marissa Hanlon (REP) with 916. Trailing the top two is Thomas G. Kenyon (CON) with 195 votes and David Phares with 123.

On Wednesday, Hanlon released a statement, showing gratitude to her supporters.

“I appreciate each and every vote, which is why my campaign will be requesting a hand recount,” the statement said. “I couldn’t be prouder of the collective effort that was put forward … It has been an absolute honor. No matter what happens, I am thankful for all the conversations I’ve had and friends I have made along this path.”

At the time of publishing, Rice has not returned Oswego County Today’s request for a statement or comment.

The City of Oswego will also elect a new mayor as former city councilor Robert Corradino ran unopposed.

The one state-wide vote up for grabs that Oswego County residents could vote on is for the State Supreme Court Justice in the Fifth Judicial District. The ballot requested to vote for two candidates out of the three: Jean Marie Westlake (REP, CON), Peter M. Rayhill (REP, CON) and Bob Cohen (Worker’s).

In Oswego County, Westlake received 11,004 votes (32.4%), Rayhill received 10,587 (31.17%) and Bob Cohen received 3,108 (9.15%). There was 117 write-in votes (0.34%), 128 void votes (0.38%) and 9,018 left blank (26.55%).

Across the district, Westlake received 107,057 votes (30.55%), Rayhill received 98,433 (28.09%) and Cohen received 39,252 (11.2%). There were also 1,147 write-ins (0.33%). 588 void (0.17%) and 103,986 left blank (29.67%). These numbers remain unofficial until the election can be certified.

Voters have also unofficially voted “Yes” to two propositions across the state. Prop. 1, to remove small city school districts from special constitutional debt limitations, saw “Yes” receive 56.75% of the vote (1,382,020 votes), while “No” received 31.46% (766,093). There were 934 votes left void.

Proposition 2 is to extend the sewage project debt exclusion limit from the debt limit. Of nearly 2.43 million voters, 59.75% said “Yes,” (1,459,581 votes) and 28.04% said “No,” (685,019), while 12.19% left it blank (297,890) and 0.02% of votes were voided (417). Oswego County supported both propositions as 61.33% voted “Yes” for the first and 63.35% for the second.
