OSWEGO, NY – Despite all the hype near the end of the Month, August wound up pretty average.
“All in all, it was pretty close to average overall,” said Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service.
The average temperature last month was 71.0 degrees. That is 1.6 degrees above average, which Gregway says “is no bug deal.”
The highest temperature was 85 degrees on the 13th and the lowest was 56 degrees on the 23rd and 30th.
August saw no new records and no temperatures in the 90s, either.
“We had 15 days where the high was 80 or above (2 streaks of 4 in a row). And twice the low overnight was in the 70s (on the 1st and 2nd),” Gregway said. “There were no maximum temperatures below 70.”
Only 3 times did the overnight low drop into (the upper) 50s.
Total precipitation for the month was 6.13 inches. That is 2.33 inches above average.
The greatest precipitation in a 24-hour period was 2.26 inches on the 9th. That was followed by 1.56 inches on the 21st.
“We had a couple big rains to get us up there. It rained quite a bit,” Gregway said.
There were 12 days (2 streaks of 3 in a row) where measurable precipitation fell. Two days had just a trace. And 17 days (3 streaks of 3 in a row) saw no precipitation.
“The rain seemed top be spaced out about every other day or so last month,” Gregway observed.
Since the first of the year, precipitation stands at 32.69 inches. That is 5.97 inches above.
“Looks like we just could wind up with a wet year,” Gregway said.
The area saw 56 percent of the possible amount of sunshine. That is 8 percentages below normal.
The number of cloudy days, 9, was 1 above average.
The number of partly cloudy days, 19, was 7 above average.
The number of clear days, 3, was 8 below average.
August had 4 thunderstorm days, which is 1 below average. “On the 21st we actually had 4 separate thunderstorm cells move through,” Gregway pointed out. “And, on the 25th we had 2.”
There were no foggy days, which is average.
The highest barometric pressure was 30.23 and the lowest was 29.37 on the 28th. That coincided with the coming and going of Hurricane Irene in our area, Gregway noted.
“It was kind of a breezy month. The strongest winds were north-northeasterly 30-40 mph with some higher gusts on the 28th, the same day as our pressure bottoming out,” Gregway said. “On the 10th the wind was westerly at 25 to 35 mph. We had a couple of good windy days.”
