State Route 48 Closed Between Burden Drive and Munn Street
OSWEGO, NY – On Sunday, February 28, at approximately 7 p.m., the city of Oswego Police Department was dispatched to the area of State Route 48 at Munn Street for a report of a crack in the pavement.
At this time a portion of State Route 48 will be closed for repairs, police said today (Feb. 29).
Northbound traffic on State Route 48 will be detoured at Munn Street.
Southbound traffic will be detoured at Burden drive until further notice.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE BELOW:
OSWEGO, NY – Mayor Billy Barlow is asking that people “Please avoid Route 48 tomorrow (Feb. 29), a large portion of the road has caved in and presents a dangerous situation. Route 48 is a state road and we are coordinating with the state DOT to address this right away!”

A picture posted on the mayor’s Facebook page shows substantial damage to the roadway between Munn Street and Burden Drive.
The street, which turns into Route 48, is a state road.
Mayor Barlow said the city is coordinating with the DOT “to address the issue promptly.”

PERHAPS IF THE STREETS WERE MAINTAINED LIKE THEY SHOULD BE THIS WOULDN’T OF HAPPENED. WE COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR STREETS NOT BEING TAKEN CARE OF, NO ONE LISTENS AND THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS…… THAT DOES NOT EVEN LOOK AS BAD AS OTHER PLACES IN THE CITY SUCH AS THE “FORKS OF THE ROAD” ENTIRE AREA. HOW MANY OF US HAVE HAD TO SPEND HUNDRED OF DOLLARS TO HAVE CAR REPAIRS MADE DUE TO LACK OF STREET REPAIRS. NEW MAYOR, SAME PROMISES BEING BROKEN JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER MAYOR IN MY MEMORY. I QUESTION WHY I HAVE BOTHERED TO WRITE TO THE MAYOR (WITH NO RESPONSE) ABOUT MY CONCERNS ABOUT IMPORTANT ISSUES WITH THE CITY,TRY TO USE MY MY VOICE IN THIS MANNER ECT…AND NOW I QUESTION WHY I BOTHER TO VOTE. AS I HAVE SAID BEFORE PROMISES MADE, PROMISES BROKEN. NOTHING TO ELSE TO SAY WHEN NO ONE CARE AND NO ONE LISTENS AND NO ONE DOES THERE JOB TO THE BEST OF THERE ABILITY THAT WE, THE TAX PAYERS OF ARE PAYING FOR .
WHY IS IT THAT PEOPLE ARE BLAMING THE MAYOR? IT IS A STATE ROUTE ROAD (AS IN STATE ROUTE 48, ALSO, AS IS STATE ROUTE 104). IF PEOPLE WOULD READ THE WHOLE ARTICLE, THE MAYOR IS WORKING WITH THE STATE DOT! IT JUST GETS SO FRUSTRATING WHEN PEOPLE PLAY THE BLAME GAME WITHOUT KNOWING ANY OF THE FACTS!!!
The STATE has worked on this portion of Rt 48 EXTENSIVELY…just 2 years ago. I guess the STATE can’t get it RIGHT. This is NOT the city of Oswego doing the work. I know the mayor will encourage the STATE to get it right.
what they did was not extensive. They have been filling and patching this for 20 years. It’s time to fix it right. It won’t be long and they will have to do this on the other side of the river along 481 where the banks are starting to give way.
Apparently I have my streets mixed up, I read the article but I was sure that was within in city limits and thought that the city was responsible from there on. I did not know that the State was responsible up to Utica street or is it? Where is the cut off? You should know Theresa as you so kindly pointed out my mistake. As to the rest of my comment.. There are more streets besides state streets in Oswego. I do hope the Mayor proves me wrong. It would be a nice change.
You’re right – it is within the city limits. Just like State Route 104 (Bridge Street)
Ultimately the state is responsible …
Although I agree with the poster that we need to get to these repairs, the question is: who wants to pay for it? MOST of America’s infrastructure is in a don’t fix it until it needs it scenario. THIS small problem is not the issue that the State of New York has to face. Do you really want to know what the BRIDGES across this state look like, and would you want to be a commuter who has to go over the ones in NYC on a daily basis?
I think we need to cut the State some slack. They fix what needs to be fixed, but NYS doesn’t have the tax dollars to fix what hasn’t broken yet. Sort of like at home. Do MOST of us fix things in our homes before they break? Ideally, we would, when they get old.
Do we WANT to pay higher and higher taxes? It’s not easy for the State elected officials to figure out what NEEDS doing, at the same time as they address what HAS to be done.
Just saying…we enjoy pretty good quality roads in our state in comparison with other states. When we travel we notice these things, not so much when we live among them. In a perfect world, well, everything would be perfect.
Now I need to go and screw down the door nob that’s pulling away from the door. Bet you have a few things like that, too. And so does the state…Rt 48…for instance.
Shelly I agree with you about all of the city streets that need to be fixed, should get fixed. The sad part is they only have so much in the budget, and unfortunately that had to be spread out through the whole year, (to my understanding). Who knows maybe they have, or should, have a separate budget just for fixing the streets.
State Route 48 runs to Utica Street, then goes West on Utica Street then North on West 5th Street and ends at State Route 104.
Thank you all for the information and clearing up my confusion.
This whole situation really cracks me up. Time to get out the caulking guns!
