Chatterton Awarded 2008 Elmer G. Hadlow Memorial Music Scholarship

OSWEGO, NY – Oswego High School Senior David M. Chatterton of Oswego, was recently named the recipient of the 2008 Elmer G. Hadlow Memorial Music Scholarship, which is awarded annually to an OHS student who pursues an education and/or career in music.

The $500 annual scholarship was established in 2005, upon the passing of Elmer G. Hadlow, a longtime resident of Oswego, and strong advocate of music in the Oswego community.

Absent from the photo are Yvonne Hadlow, Elmer’s wife; and predeceased daughter, Julia.Hadlow sang for more than 50 years in church choirs, barbershop quartets and choruses throughout Oswego County and Central New York.

Elizabeth Enwright was the award winner last year and Laura Zaryski in 2006.

“We’re extremely pleased to recognize David for his considerable musical accomplishments while at the Oswego High School,” said a spokesperson for the Hadlow family members. “And, we wish him the best of luck on his college and professional endeavors going forward. Our father’s passion was music and he would be very proud to know someone as talented as David was the recipient of an award in his name. David continues a wonderful tradition of award winners, and we look forward to providing the scholarship to other talent musicians for years to come.”

The son of David and Marie Chatterton of Oswego, David will attend the Fredonia School of Music at SUNY Fredonia, and hopes to someday become a music teacher.

His musical accomplishments at Oswego High School include: Cello Section Leader/First Chair OHS Concert and Symphonic Orchestras (2004-2008); member of “Fiddles on Fire”; master class at The Strings Experience/SUNY Fredonia (2006); NYSSMA Solo Festivals (2000-2008); All County Festival Orchestras (2002-2008); lead singing role in Oswego Opera Theaters “Noah’s Flood” in 2007; and numerous other orchestras/groups.

David was also active in OHS sports and various community groups.
