OSWEGO, NY – At its meeting Monday night, the Common Council paved the way for the Oswego Sunrise Rotary Club to continue its humanitarian efforts locally.
The council approved a request by the Rotarians to use Leotta Park and the Railroad Tunnel on June 11.
The club will hold a yard sale. It will also conduct evaluations of gold, watches and antiques.
The event will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will support the many community service projects of Rotary, including youth projects, international health and safety programs, disaster relief, and support for local charities including our service men and women deployed overseas, according to Rotary member George Reed.
Those who would like to rent space may do so for $20.

Councilors approved Local Law No. 2 of 2011. It amends the charter and code of the city to change the title of “alderman” to the gender neutral “councilor.”
Councilors also approved several requests to use public space.
Atom Avery, owner of the new Beacon Hotel, 75 W. Bridge St. (former Knights of Columbus), wants to install a new advertising sign for the hotel in public space at the northwest corner of West Bridge and Fifth streets.
The proposed sign would be 24 square feet in area and placed in a planter. The total height of the sign, including the planter, will be six feet.
Avery also wants to install a canvas awning for the main entrance to the hotel from West Bridge Street.
The proposed awning is eight feet by 20 feet and extends over public space approximately nine feet. It will terminate five feet from the city sidewalk.
Patty Lawson, owner of a single-family dwelling at 69 W. Mohawk St., wants to expand her front porch into public space.
The proposed use of public space will be 6.4 feet by 10 feet, fronting on the residence.
The city accepted a donation of two trees from John Spano.
Spano, of 121 E. Ninth St., donated two trees to be planted in public space in front of his property on East Ninth Street.
The trees will be planted by the DPW.
Councilors granted permission to Girl Scout Troop No. 10072 to paint a mural on the wall at the Gallagher Swimming Pool.
It is part of a Bronze Award project for some of the scouts.
The theme of the mural is “Save our Earth.”
The council granted a variance of the noise ordinance to Shane Broadwell, owner of GS Steamers, 70 E. First St., for June 10 from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m.
There will be a private event hosted by Delta Kappa Kappa Alumni Association for SUNY Oswego’s 150th Alumni Weekend.
The mayor was authorized to execute a new indemnification and hold harmless agreement with the Oswego City School District so that the city may continue to use school district property without insurance certificates.
He was also authorized to execute all documents necessary to effectuate the state assistance contract amendment and completion of the Flexo Wire Site Environmental Remediation Project.
According to Mary Vanouse, community development director, Luke McKenney, project manager for the Flexo Wire Site No. 57, 68 W. First St., for Environmental; Remediation Project BG 98297903-01, has moved from Clough Harbour Associate to AECC Environmental Consultants.
Vanouse has discussed the possibility of changing contracts for competition of the work that is recommended by the Department of Environmental Conservation in order to maintain project continuity and bring the testing and remediation of this site to an expeditious conclusion.
The DEC has no objection to the proposal and will, with approval of the Common Council, accept the city’s recommendation to move ahead with AECC to complete the project upon the request of the city.
Recently, the Common Council gave authorization to the purchasing agent to seek bids for the demolition 123 E. Seneca St.
Prior to demolition, it is necessary to conduct an environmental asbestos survey of the residence.
Two quotes were submitted and the lowest quote was submitted by Seabird Environmental ($2,450).
The council accepted the low bid Monday night.
The DPW commission’s request to purchase of a 2011 Case 58OSN backhoe with accessories from the NYS contract for use by the DPW was approved.
The council OK’d requests for travel by the police and fire departments.
Mike Dehm, police chief, requested authorization to send there officers to a three-day Street Crimes Seminar June 13 – 15.
The training will be held at SUNY Oswego.
The police chief also requested authorization to send an officer to a three-day Motorola/Oswego County E911 Radio System Staging June 13 – 15.
The travel and training, located in Schamuburg, Ill., will be provided by Motorola.
Jeff McCrobie, fire chief, also requested to send a firefighter to that training as well.
And, McCrobie requested permission for firefighter Joe Smegelsky to attend training for Fire Service Instructor 1 from Dec. 4 – 9 in Montour Falls.
Deb Coad, city chamberlain, was authorized to transfer funds within city departments for the purpose of clothing allowance and car allowance.
The city engineer was authorized to transfer $20,000 from Account A1990.0460 Contingent Account into Account A6989.0440 Contracted Services to cover the cost of repair of Unit No. 4 at the High Dam Hydroelectric Facility.
