OSWEGO – The deadline for the Youth Bureau’s children’s tree decorating contest is fast approaching.

Several of the miniature Christmas trees have been turned in, said Jennifer Losurdo of the Youth Bureau. But, several more are still out there, she added.

Children can pick up a 12-inch tree from the Youth Bureau, at the county complex on Bunner Street, decorate it and return it no later than Dec. 13.

“The contest is open to children only,” Losurdo said. “There are three categories; children 3-4 years old, 5-7 years old and 8-10 years old.”

Prizes (Wal-Mart gift cards) will be awarded to the winner of each age group.

The trees can be decorated any way the youngsters wish.

So far, youngsters have used brightly colored bottle caps, handmade angels, ceramic candy canes, wreaths made out of pipe cleaners and more.

However, lights on trees cannot be plugged in while on display for judging.

“They did a great job! And, they’re just little kids that do this,” Losurdo said. “They are very creative. We’ve given out 57 trees so far. Whether they all come back, we’ll see.”

Tree will be on display in the lower level of Canal Commons this coming week (from Dec. 14 through 23).

The youngsters will be able to take their trees home following the judging.

Judging will be by members of the public. They can vote by writing down the number of their favorite tree, using the holiday ballot box next to the trees.

The trees are free to pick up and the voting is free.
