OSWEGO, NY – Leaders from both sides of the aisle say the Oswego County Legislature will work together for the betterment of all residents this year.
Over all, the new legislature looks very good, Minority Leader Mike Kunzwiler noted.
“Jake’s not new to the game; he’s been (Oswego) city (Democrat) chair for a while, he’s self-employed so, to me in this economy, I think that’s what people want representing them,” the Democrat said of Jacob Mulcahey for example.
Amy Tresidder also comes from a good background, he said, adding her father was chairman of the St. Lawrence County Legislature and her brother is currently a legislator there.
“I think we’ll do well this year. We (the minority) have talked with (Legislature Chairman) Barry (Leemann), he promised to help support the minority caucus with some things, so we’re going to support him on some things as well,” he said. “We’ve asked for a few things and he’s been very cordial to us. That’s bipartisan; it shows a willingness to work together. It’s a good way to start the year.”
Leemann, a Republican, added that he looks forward to working with all the legislators, new and veterans, on both sides of the aisle.
“I think they’re going to be terrific. We have a lot of good people coming back and I think the new legislators have a lot to offer as well,” the chairman said.
“We have a very good legislature, and I just hope that people listen to each other and respect what each other is saying,” added Jack Proud, the vice chair of the legislature. “As long as they do that, we’ll get along fine. There are going to be some very tough challenges facing the county this year and in the coming years. We’ll be alright if we all work together and stay focused on what’s best for the county.”
If the state doesn’t hurt the county too badly in 2010, things would be better, the Republican added, alluding to the economic disarray facing state government.
