Dr. Mather Retires After 52 Years Of Service In Oswego County

OSWEGO, NY – After providing care to the community for more than 52 years, Joseph Edmund Mather, M.D., F.A.C.O.G. obstetrician/gynecologist of Oswego County OB-GYN, P.C., has announced he will retire at the end of June.

Dr. Mather Sr. has been providing women’s health care in Oswego since 1961 while maintaining privileges at Oswego Hospital until his retirement.

Dr. Mather started his college education at St. John’s University where he graduated magna cum laude in 1950.

He began medical school at the State University of New York at Syracuse where he also graduated magna cum laude in 1954.

For his residency and internship, Dr. Mather Sr. trained at Nassau County Medical Center from 1954-1959.

Before moving to Oswego, Dr. Mather was a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.

He was stationed at Womack Army Hospital in Fort Bragg, NC, where he worked as an obstetrician and gynecologist from 1959-1961.

When Dr. Mather moved to Oswego in 1961, he joined Drs. Quigley and Grant and the practice evolved into Oswego County OB-GYN P.C. when Ronald Uva, MD, joined him in 1980.

The practice continues today as the only OB-GYN practice in Oswego County.

The practice consists of Dr. Uva, Dr. Daniel Coty, Dr. Raj Mahajan, Dr. Venkata Dasari, Judy DiMarco, Nurse Practitioner, and Catherine Tambroni-Parker, Certified Nurse Midwife, as well as numerous medical and clerical staff members.

The practice will continue to care for Dr. Mather’s patients in the years to come.

Aside from his work at Oswego County OB-GYN and Oswego Hospital, Dr. Mather was an associate professor at SUNY Upstate in obstetrics and gynecology from 1980-1996.

Dr. Mather is also certified by the National Board for Hypnotherapy and Anesthesiology as a medical hypnotherapist and a hypnotic anesthesiologist.

Dr. Mather served as the obstetrics and gynecology department chief at Oswego Hospital for 22 years.

He is a past president of Oswego County Medical Society, past president of CNY Association of OB-GYNs and past chairman of American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) District II Section 5.

He continues to serve as a member of the Oswego County Board of Public Health.

Dr. Mather has been fortunate to have worked with three of his sons and his wife throughout his career, as well as a grandson who is a physician.

Dr. Joseph Edward Mather, his eldest son, followed in his footsteps in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Mather Jr. also worked at Oswego County OB-GYN and at Oswego Hospital from 1986 until his death in 2012.

His wife, Mary Jane, was a nurse practitioner and worked at the practice for many years.

His son, Daniel, has been the practice manager of Oswego County OB-GYN since 1986, and his son, Patrick, is the practice’s certified public accountant.

Dr. Mather’s eldest grandson, Dr. Joseph A. Mather, is completing his residency in family medicine in New Orleans, La.

“My father has instilled an exceptional work ethic in his family, the staff and his colleagues, who I am sure wish him a long and happy retirement,” said Dan Mather. “I believe he will be missed greatly by all of the lives he has touched.”

  1. He will be missed greatly! Especially his humor and good cheer in the face of some ‘otherwise’ embarrassing procedures, lol!

    Have a wonderful retirement. At this age, you have certainly EARNED all the fun in the sun you can get! We hope to continue to see your smiling face around the Oswego community at least “part” of the year.
