OSWEGO – Dr. Alfred D. Frederick, distinguished service professor in SUNY Oswego’s curriculum and instruction department, recently participated in the State Conference on Education in the State of Piaui, Brazil.
The forum is a component of Brazil’s National Curriculum Reform Project, involving national mobilization for the discussion of public policies on education leading to the construction of decennial education plans for municipalities, states and the country.
Among his activities during the three-day conference, Frederick spoke on a panel titled “Education and Diversity: Social Justice, Inclusion and Human Rights.”
The Oswego professor was invited in recognition of “the excellent results of [his] work . . . as a consultant and visiting professor at the Federal University of Piaui and the State University of Piaui, as a researcher in the areas of multiculturalism, the quality of the schooling process in Piaui’s public primary and secondary schools, as well as curriculum development in the areas of higher education and teacher training,” said State Secretary of Education Atila Lira and conference coordinator Jose Ribamar Torres Rodrigues.
Frederick’s participation and contribution to the conference is an activity of the SUNY Oswego School of Education’s African and Brazilian Academic and Cultural Exchange and Project CLIMB, as well as the partnership between the State Secretariat of Education in the State of Piaui and SUNY Oswego.
Earlier this year as part of these endeavors, Dr. Faith Maina, professor of curriculum and instruction, visited the State University of Piaui in Brazil and conducted a three-day seminar on action research. At the end of the seminar, her students presented their work in a research symposium that involved both the State University of Piaui and the neighboring Federal University of Piaui.
Frederick noted that he plans to arrange for more faculty members from SUNY Oswego to travel to Piaui, continuing the partnership between the Piaui State Secretariat of Education and the college.
