OSWEGO, NY – Oswego City School District Superintendent of Schools Bill Crist continues his “town hall” style visits to three more elementary schools during the week of February 13-16.
Crist has already visited with parents and teachers at the Charles E. Riley and Frederick Leighton elementary schools and will conclude his presentations with the other three schools.

These meetings are in cooperation and in conjunction with the Home and School Association monthly meetings.
On Monday at Crist will be at the Fitzhugh Park Elementary School at 5 p.m. and is scheduled for Kingsford Park Elementary School on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and the visits will conclude at Minetto Elementary on February 16 at 6:30 p.m.
Redistricting is a major topic in the Oswego City School District and at the January meeting of the Board of Education the Superintendent of Schools provided an overview of a proposal that would include approximately 283 students.
“We need to have a better student population balance in our elementary schools. This needs to be looked at and this is the time to do it. We are looking at boundary lines. The Board of Education has indicated it wants to maintain five elementary schools,” Crist said.
He noted Oswego school officials desires a better balance in student population and class size.
He stressed that he wanted “the same education, same program and same educational experience’ for students”.
Crist noted he hopes to present the final proposal to the Board of Education during the February 28 meeting and would like the redistricting to be in effect on the first day of school in September.

The school district conducted a redistricting in the mid nineties, but Crist said, “Population zones have shifted over the years and we need to have a better balance.”
In his first meeting at Charles E. Riley Elementary School he explained the substantially changed boundary lines and noted “The square miles of the Charles E. Riley Schools have been reduced from 9.69 square miles to 2.08 square miles.”
He did note that while students would be shifted mostly to Minetto Elementary School that students moving into sixth grade would be allowed to remain in their current buildings, if they so desire. Also it was noted that custody, child care and health options would also be considered for students.
Crist noted that among the considerations would be the density of school populations, the desire to have students on the bus for no more than one hour and the effort to be efficient and economics would play a role in the shifting to schools.
The superintendent of schools said, “Children are resilient and will do anything that we ask of them. They will make new friends, have ne experiences and have new teachers. This will be a successful transition if adults embrace it. All of the students will have a successful experience if all of the involved adults believe it in. We need to embrace this for the 283 students who are involved.”
