OSWEGO – The Oswego City School District will offer four sports at the varsity level only beginning Wednesday, Sept. 23.

The district’s Board of Education approved Friday a varsity return for the four fall sports allowed under Section III guidelines – soccer, boys golf, cross country and girls tennis with the first day of practices planned for Sept. 23 to allow ample time for registration and communication.

During the meeting, Superintendent Dr. Mathis Calvin III presented to the Board financial breakdowns for different options. He concluded with a recommendation for varsity sports only, noting it would save on extra costs and staffing plus logistical concerns with so many extra teams while allowing those approaching their final years as a student-athlete a chance to play.

“Not only does this keep the cost component a little more manageable, but also in terms of health and safety it would be a lot more manageable for us and staff to handle,” Calvin said, adding he thinks the district can most safely manage varsity only at this time.

District officials noted that junior varsity and modified sports could be added later as information surrounding the pandemic changes.

Choosing a varsity only program would save OCSD more than $60,000 in additional costs, Calvin said, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including health and safety protocols, transportation and additional costs for everything needed.

Additional funds could be saved if less transportation is needed, district officials added, as a preliminary survey indicated fewer students would need a bus than estimated.

Varsity athletes can register for sports in the sign-up portal, and they will be contacted regarding the practice schedule and other logistics.

  1. So they are spending the money for sports but don’t have enough chrome books for all students. Interesting decision.
