OSWEGO, NY – July goes into the record book cooler, but not as wet as you may think.
According to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service, the average temperature last month was 67.2 degrees, which is 3.6 degrees cooler than normal.
The highest temperature was 87 degrees on the 20th and the lowest was 51 degrees on the 14th.
There were no records set, Gregway said.
“We had 7 days where the high was 80 or above. And, we had 4 days when the high was in the 60s,” he added.
Total precipitation for the month was 2.82 inches.
That is 0.21-inch below average, according to Gregway.
“It may have seemed like we got more rain because of when it happened,” Gregway observed. “We got some heavy downpours near the end of the month. It made Harborfest wet and kind of messy. But the month over all wasn’t quite average.”
The greatest precipitation in a 24-hour period was 1.06 inches on the 11th.
For the year, precipitation at the end of July was 21.76 inches. That is 1.13 inches below normal.
There were 5 thunderstorms last month, which is 1 below average.
There weren’t any foggy days in July, which is normal.
The highest barometric pressure was 30.27 on the 10th and the lowest was 29.67 on the 1st.
The area saw 50 percent of the possible amount of sunshine. That is 19 percentages below average.
The highest winds were gusts greater than 25 mph from the west on the 4th and from the west-southwest on the 13th.
The number of cloudy days, 13, was 5 above average.
The number of partly cloudy days, 14, was 2 above average.
The number of clear days, 4, was 7 below average.
The cooler temperatures last month were “no biggie,” according to Gregway.
“We only tied for 13th coolest July (with 1884),” he said. “The warmest is 75.8 degrees in 1921. The coldest is 64.6 degrees in 1891.”
Recently, we have come close to the being the warmest July on record, he added.
The average for July 2006 was 74.2 degrees (5th place) and a year earlier it was 74.5 degrees (4th place). And in 1999, July was 74.8 degrees (3rd place).
The highest temperature recorded during July in the Port City is 100 degrees on the 1st in 1878. The lowest is 44 degrees on the 8th in 1969.
The wettest July is 9.35 inches in 1992 and the driest is 0.13-inch in 1853.
By comparison, July 2008 was just 0.2-degree cooler than average.
There was 1 day in the 90s and 12 in the 80s.
And, there were 3 times when the overnight low stuck in the 70s.
The low for July 2008 was the same as this year – 51 degrees.
