June 2010 Was Warmer, Much Wetter Than Average

OSWEGO, NY – It was just a tad warmer than normal last month – and a heck of a lot wetter than usual.

The average temperature last month was 66.7 degrees. That is 1.4 degrees above average.

“It was above average. I thought that we were going to be below average,” Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service, said of June’s average temperature.

The warmest June on record is 71.7 degrees in 2005. Right behind that is 71.2 degrees in 1949.

So last month’s 66.7 degrees, while above average, “was no big deal really,” according to Gregway.

The highest temperature was 86 degrees on the 19th and the lowest was 50 degrees on the 9th.

There were no new records set, Gregway noted.

“We had 6 days where the temperature was 80 degrees or higher and 2 days where it was only in the 60s,” he said. “The overnight low was in the 70s twice.”

Total precipitation for June 2010 was 7.74 inches. That’s 4.32 inches above average.

“I believe that is more than March, April and May combined,” Gregway said.

The greatest precipitation in a 24-hour period last month was 1.13 inches on the 28th.

The wettest June is 1887 (9.81 inches) and the least precipitation for June is 0.12-inch in 1955.

The highest barometric pressure last month was 30.15 on the 8th, 11th and 18th.  The lowest was 29.27 on the 6th.

“The pressure was around 29.90 or lower all month,” Gregway observed.

There were 17 days of measurable precipitation last month with streaks of 6 and 3 days in a row.

There was 1 day with just a trace.

And, June had 12 days with no precipitation including 4 streaks of 2 days in a row.

“For a while there it seemed like the came every other day in June,” Gregway said. “We got a lot of spurts and squirts.”

The number of cloudy days, 11, was 2 above average.

The number of partly cloudy days, 16, was 5 above average.

The number of clear days, 3, was 7 below average.

“We had 3 thunderstorm days, which is 2 below average,” Gregway said, adding that 1 day had 2 distinct storms.

There were 3 foggy days, which is 2 above average.
