OSWEGO, NY – The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a lake effect snow warning – which is in effect from 4 p.m. today (Nov. 16) until 1 p.m. Monday.
The lake effect snow watch is no longer in effect.
Mixed rain and wet snow today may fall as just snow across the Tug Hill, but as the afternoon and evening progress the precipitation will change to snow at the lower elevations as well.
Snowfall accumulations of 1 to 3 inches can be expected over the Tug Hill today.
Most of which will fall this afternoon.
The snow tonight will become heavy at times and should be focused over the Tug Hill Plateau.
Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour are anticipated for tonight, with the heaviest snow being accompanied by occasional thunder and lightning.
Snowfall amounts tonight will range from 4 to 8 inches across the Tug Hill with lesser amounts found across the remainder of Oswego County.
Little snowfall is expected north of Lowville.
The snow is expected to continue through most of Monday, with the heaviest and steadiest snow falling during the morning.
By Monday evening, total snowfall accumulations will exceed a foot across the Tug Hill.
The early season lake effect snow is expected to greatly impact travel conditions tonight and early Monday.
So motorists should plan accordingly.
Poor travel conditions should also be found on Interstate 81, particularly between midnight tonight and 8 a.m. Monday.
The plume of heavy snow should remain north of the Syracuse airport though, so a major impact to air travel from that site isn’t expected.
In lake effect snow, the weather can vary from locally heavy snow in narrow bands to clear skies just a few miles away.
