Man Injured In Sunday Evening Fire

Staff Report

OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire early this evening (Aug. 17)  that slightly injured one resident.

The fire at 292-B Duer St. was reported at 7:04 p.m.

Fire department units were on the scene at 7:08 p.m.

Smoke was showing from the main floor of the south apartment in the raised two-story two-unit house.

All occupants were confirmed to be out of the apartment when firefighters arrived.

A crew entered through the side door into the kitchen and put out a fire in the stove area.

There was moderate to heavy fire damage to the stove, kitchen cabinets, countertops, and the wall behind the unit.

There was also moderate smoke damage throughout all levels of the structure.

The adjacent apartment had very minor smoke damage.

The building is owned by John Saternow of Oswego.

Deputy Chief Mark McManus stated that the cause of the fire was accidental.

An occupant was heating oil on the stove-top for cooking, and left it briefly unattended.

Upon her return, the oil had caught fire and flared up, and was smoking heavily.

She exited the apartment along with a family dog.

A second occupant of the apartment, Jeremy Horn, was alerted to the fire by smoke detectors sounding while he was sleeping upstairs.

He exited the building by going past the fire to the side door.

He suffered minor burns to his right arm and face while escaping from the building.

Horn was examined by OFD paramedics at the scene, but was not transported to a hospital.

Rebecca Flynn, the second occupant, was not injured.

The occupants will be staying with family overnight.

Twelve Oswego firefighters responded to the incident.

All units were back in service at 7:40 p.m. missing or outdated ad config
