Mayor Proclaims Arbor Day In Oswego, Tree Planting, Pruning Workshop Set April 27

OSWEGO, NY – At Monday night’s Common Council meeting, Mayor Billy Barlow was joined by members of the Oswego Tree Stewards as he proclaimed Friday Arbor Day in the Port City.

The Oswego City Tree Stewards will celebrate Arbor Day on April 27 at 4 p.m. at Hamilton Park by planting a new tree in the park and hosting a pruning workshop by Jim Maloney a NYS Certified Forester, according to Valerie Dawnstar, coordinator.

The public is invited to the event to learn the principles of healthy tree planting and pruning techniques.

Mayor Barlow and the city of Oswego DPW tree crew will be part of the tree planting ceremony.

“We’ve been a Tree City USA for seven years,” Dawnstar said. :That status dictated that the city have a tree advisory board. We’re volunteers. The board advises the mayor about all issues relating to trees.”

The tree stewards act as a liason between members of the public and city officials.

Tree City USA Program requires participating municipalities to adopt a Tree Ordinance, provide an annual budget to plant and maintain the urban forest, include a Tree Advisory Board and show support for its trees through supporting a volunteer tree steward program that dedicates a number of hours to maintaining community trees, Dawnstar explained following Monday’s meeting.

The Oswego Tree Stewards meet every Saturday to prune and maintain city trees. The stewards want not only to ‘maintain’ the city’s trees but increase the number of trees within the Port City, Dawnstar added.

In 2018, the tree stewards are implementing a Saturdays in the Parks Program, beginning with Hamilton Park, located at East Seventh and Hamilton streets.
