OSWEGO, NY – The mercury broiled up to 93 degrees Monday afternoon.
That broke the old record high of 90 degrees set in 1987 and 1908, according to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service.
“Right around 1 p.m., we hit 91 degrees to break the old record,” he said. “The temperature peaked at 93 between 2 – 3 p.m.”
The last time the temperature was this high, it was also 93 degrees. That mark was reached on Sept. 7, 2007; Aug. 1, 2006; and Aug. 4, 2005, Gregway said, adding the highest recent temperature was 97 degrees on Aug. 14, 2002.
“We’ve had some very nice (rain-free) weather recently. I’d ask that anyone in the city that received a tree this year, please, if you haven’t already, consider giving it about five gallons of water twice a week,” Councilor Connie Cosemento said at Monday night’s council meeting.
“The Oswego Tree Stewards are asking everyone who has a newly planted tree near their home, business or school to please water them,” added June MacArthur. “The city waters the hanging flower baskets, but not the newly planted trees. We’ve been without rain for over two weeks and the success of these trees is being compromised with this drought.”
Even well established trees can use a watering occasionally during these dry times, she added.
