Nine Mile Point 1 nuclear power plant shut down safely Monday because of a balky system to circulate water in the nuclear plant’s reactor.
The safety of the reactor was never in question, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
The system that regulates water levels in the reactor malfunctioned, putting a small amount of water into the reactor above the level of water required. At 11:58 a.m., operators noticed the problem and began a manual shutdown of the system.
The water in the reactor is being cooled from its customary 450 degrees and the NRC reports all systems are working properly.
Nine Mile 1 will stop making power until the system that controls water in the reactor can be fixed.
Nine Mile 2 was not affected.
