OSWEGO, NY – At the March Oswego school board meeting a handful of people voiced their opinions regarding the district’s proposed 2011-12 spending plan.
At Tuesday night’s public hearing on the budget, no one spoke.
The superintendent’s proposed budget, which was adopted by the board last month, is $74,744,748.
“It goes without saying that the process this year was challenging,” Superintendent Bill Crist said in his budget newsletter. “The end result however is one that resulted in a unanimous endorsement by the board, a budget that is $103,297 below the current budget and $1,540,379 below the state contingency cap, a zero tax levy increase and the preservation of many of the programs that our community continues to be proud to have in Oswego.”
In a brief special meeting following the public hearing, the board approved ratification of the COASA (Central Office) contract for one year, which includes a salary freeze.
“I would like to thank COASA for stepping up at a difficult time in our budget and agreeing to a freeze. We certainly appreciate the effort that COASA has put forth,” the superintendent said.
The budget is Proposition #1 on the ballot. Proposition #2, if approved, would enable the district to buy 10 new school buses at a cost of $968,000.
The district is looking to acquire eight 66-passenger buses ($107,000 apiece), one 34-passenger bus ($48,000) and one 34-passenger bus with a wheelchair lift ($54,000).

Five persons are vying for three positions on the board of education.
The terms of John Dunsmoor, Sam Tripp and William “Dave” White expire on June 30. White isn’t seeking re-election.
The candidates include Dunsmoor, William Myer, Jean Parker, Lynda Sereno and Tripp.
Voters in the district will go to the polls on May 17, from noon to 9 p.m.

First Ward – McCrobie Building, Lake Street
Second Ward – Fitzhugh Park Elementary School library lobby
Third Ward – Frederick Leighton Elementary School lobby
Fourth Ward – Education Center lobby
Fifth Ward – Cullinan Ice Rink behind Kingsford Park Elementary School

Seventh Ward – Oswego Middle School Music Room
