OSWEGO – Oswego County School District Board of Education election results were one of the main topics discussed during last night’s BOE meeting, June 17.

Tabulations from June 16 voting determined the addition of Superintendent Dr. Mathis A. Calvin III, and three new board members; Pamela Dowd, Lisa Glidden and Dr. James Mackenzie.

Calvin will replace Dr. Dean Goeway beginning July 1.

“Dr. Calvin, welcome. I look forward to meeting you again,” Goewey said. “We’ve had a few opportunities to meet in the past, and I’m sure we’ll have a lot to talk about [in the future].”

Goeway’s term is set to expire on June 30, 2020, along with board members Brian Chetney, Brandon Lagoe and Samuel Tripp. Dowd, Glidden and MacKenzie will replace the member’s posts. All positions are on a three-year basis.

“I want to officially thank Dr. Calvin for all of his patience through a cumbersome process, and also the members of our school district who were so understanding about the process that we engaged in,” BOE President Heather DelConte said. “I’m just really excited to have Dr. Calvin on board. I want to thank him for being here tonight, and I want to thank him officially.”

Goewey spent time thanking everyone for their involvement in the election process, noting the difficult circumstances brought about by the pandemic.

He thanked voters for their participation in approving the budget, busing, and capital reserve propositions and the board/public library trustee decisions.

“I want to restate the thanks Heather gave previously, for those who worked on this very unique budget vote this year, especially Karen,” Goewey said. “I don’t think many people have an appreciation for what it takes to have a regular school budget vote and board election, but certainly this one was extremely challenging.”

Board members exchanged heartfelt recognition and gratitude to outgoing members for their tireless work and contribution throughout their terms, with acknowledgement to Student Representative Ruhma Khawaja and her work serving the OHS senior body. The meeting ended with Calvin expressing his thanks to the board, addressing the opportunity to work with the OCSD.

“I’m so excited about being the new superintendent here at Oswego City Schools and becoming a part of the community,” Calvin said. ”As I enter the district, I’m looking forward to working with the wonderful people who are here tonight, and the entire community. My goal is to serve the students, the parents, the staff, the Board of Education and the entire community as a whole in the Oswego City School District.”

Other topics discussed tonight centered on the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Power Plant PILOT Agreement for Units 1 and 2. Ferrera Attorney Kathryn Garrett was a guest at tonight’s meeting, outlining the proposal during a PowerPoint presentation.

Garrett worked with the School Budget Negotiation Team to secure and guarantee a robust compromise between area school districts and the plant.

The OCSD, Oswego County and the Town of Scriba reached a tentative agreement with Nine Mile Nuclear Station, LLC., which provides for five years of PILOT payments. Payments would be made to the school districts in two equal installments: October 31 and February 28 of each year.

The new provisions will ensure better protection for school district interests, along with improved financial aid. The new five-year PILOT plan will account for $30.4 million dollars in tax revenue.

Other items on the agenda included commencement plans for the OHS graduating class off 2020. Graduation will take place on June 27, at the OMS Stadium starting at 8 a.m. and continuing on until the afternoon.

Families of graduating seniors will receive detailed information regarding finalized commencement plans in the near future.

BOE meetings are held the third Wednesday of every month. More information regarding last night’s agenda can be found here.
