OSWEGO, NY – October 2011 goes into the record books a little wetter and a tad warmer than average.
“Over all, it was pretty close to a normal month,” said Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service. “With the exception for a real heavy burst of rain near the end of the month, it was also a dry month.”
The average temperature for October was 52.3 degrees. That is 1.2 degrees warmer than normal.
The highest temperature, 77 degrees, came on the 9th and the lowest, 30 degrees, came on the 28th.
There were no new records set, according to Gregway.
“We had 5 days where the temperature was 70 degrees or higher, with a streak of 4 in a row,” he said. “The lows feel into the 30s 6 times with a stretch of 5 in a row. We were at 32 degrees or below on 2 days.”
From Oct. 5 through 12, “we had beautiful fall weather. It was clear, mild and dry,” Gregway added.
Total precipitation for the month stands at 4.91 inches. That is 1.14 inches above average.
Since the first of the year, precipitation totals 43.22 inches. That is 8.56 inches higher than where it should be.
The greatest precipitation in a 24-hour period was 1.46 inches on Oct. 20th.
“From 0015 to 0045 (12:15 to 12:45 a.m.), we had about 1.44 inches. That’s not a record, but a lot of rain in a very short period of time,” Gregway said.
There were 3 thunderstorm days last month. That is 2 more than average.
October had 2 foggy days, which is 1 more than average.
The area received no snowfall last month. The average for October is 0.4-inch.
There were 17 days of measurable precipitation, including a stretch of 5 days in a row.
Only a trace was recorded on 2 days and no precipitation fell on 12 days, which included a streak of 7 days in a row.
The number of cloudy days, 19, was 4 above average.
The number of partly cloudy days, 7, was 2 below average.
The number of clear days, 5, was 2 below average.
October saw 49 percent of the possible amount of sunshine. That is 6 percentages below average.
The highest barometric pressure was 30.49 on the 8th and the lowest was 29.19 on the 20th.
The strongest winds were west-southwesterly on the 16th between 35 and 40 mph.
“On the 1st we had north-northeasterly winds gusting above 30 mph and on the 15th we had some southwesterly winds also above 30 mph,” Gregway said. “We had a couple rather windy days last month.”
Last year, October was 1.4 degrees warmer than average. The high was 72 degrees and the low was 36 degrees.
“We didn’t have a frost during October 2010,” Gregway noted. “The first frost last year came in November.”
The precipitation was 0.1-inch below average last year.
“Other than that, it was kind of similar to this year,” Gregway observed.
The warmest October is 1947 – 58.5 degrees. The coldest is 1925 – 43.0 degrees.
October’s highest recorded temperature is 86 degrees set in 1937 and the lowest is 21 degrees recorded in 1972.
The wettest October on record is 1955 with 10.10 inches of precipitation. The driest is 1963 at 0.14-inch.
The snowiest October is 10.3 inches in 1895. Several Octobers have received no snow at all.
The greatest precipitation in a 24-hour period for October is 3.1 inches in 1873.
The greatest snowfall in a 24-hour period for October is 8.6 inches in 1895.
