
OSWEGO – An early morning fire in the City of Oswego resulted in one resident being transported to an area hospital for minor injuries. Firefighters were dispatched at 4:06am to a report of a fire at 293 Cherry Street, near the corner of Lawrence Street. Firefighters arrived within a few minutes and confirmed a single-family home fully engulfed in fire. The sole occupant of the home had already exited the building and was being assisted by Oswego Police Officers in a side yard.
Firefighters deployed multiple handlines to extinguish the fire and protect a nearby home that was being threatened by flames. Firefighters remained on scene for about 2 hours extinguishing hot spots and checking for extension. Fire damage was contained to the building of origin, with the adjacent home and two parked vehicles sustaining minor damage from the heat of the fire. The occupant of the house was transported by Menter Ambulance to Oswego Hospital with minor injuries The City of Oswego Fire Investigation Team is still on scene at this time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Several agencies assisted the Oswego Fire Department on the scene including Oswego Police Department, Oswego Code Enforcement, Oswego DPW, Fulton Fire Department, Novelis Emergency Services, Minetto Fire Department, Oswego County Fire Coordinators Office, Menter Ambulance, and National Grid. Firefighters from Scriba, and Oswego Town responded to the City of Oswego to cover any subsequent calls.
City of Oswego Assistant Fire Chief Michael Zalewski commended those working on the scene for their efforts, saying “Our Firefighters did a fantastic job in controlling this fire quickly and keeping it from spreading to the nearby home. Special thanks to our assisting City Departments and to our great mutual aid partners that assisted on the scene and stood by to cover other calls in the city during the fire”.
