“It was a pleasant surprise when OCFD Firefighter / Paramedic Andy Rockwood called to tell me that the Oswego City Fire Department would be supporting our efforts during Breast Cancer Awareness Month by selling pink Oswego Fire Department T-shirts,” said Carolyn Handville, coordinator of OCO’s Cancer Services Program of the North Country.  “The firefighters had done this in the past and I was happy to hear they did once again.”

“We appreciate the opportunity to partner with the Cancer Services Program of the North Country to raise cancer awareness in our community,” said City of Oswego Fire Chief Paul Conzone. “We all have lost loved ones to cancer, and know those who are currently battling different types of cancer. Our members are proud to wear pink shirts during the month of October to increase awareness. On a more personal level, Firefighters are routinely exposed to a wide range of carcinogens that have been linked to a higher incidence of cancer diagnoses and deaths. This partnership offers us a unique way to promote cancer awareness, early detection, and proper mitigation measures with our members and the general public.”

Adminstered by OCO, the Cancer Services Program of the North Country provides free cancer screenings including clinical breast exams, mammograms, pap/pelvic exams and colorectal cancer screenings to community members who are uninsured and between 40 and 64 years of age.  For more information on the Cancer Services Program Partnership of Oswego County contact Carolyn Handville at 315-592-0830 or visit OCO’s website at www.oco.org.
