OSWEGO – During Monday’s Oswego Common Council meeting, Mayor Robert Corradino invited Fire Chief Paul Conzone and some officials for a proclamation naming May 17th-25th Safe Boating Week in Oswego. Mayor Corradino honored both the SUNY Oswego Women’s Lacrosse team and the Men’s Tennis team.
During the public session, SUNY Oswego counselor Kyle Dzintars, also representing Organize Oswego, a local grassroots group. Dzintars came to speak out against the increased presence of ICE. Dzintars claimed during his speech that ICE was terrorizing local black and brown people.
Dzintars says that international students are afraid to leave campus due to the potential of being harassed. Bailey Smith has been a resident of Oswego since 2008.
“Safe boating begins with preparation, the Oswego Fire Department reports that human error accounts for most boating accidents, and that life jackets can prevent 75% of boating fatalities,” said Corradino. Corradino implores residents to make sure they follow all proper procedures while boating and staying sober while operating.
SUNY Oswego’s Women’s Lacrosse team was honored at the meeting for winning the SUNYAC Championship, the first time in SUNY Oswego history. This was after finishing 9-0 in conference play, where they beat longtime rivals SUNY Cortland for the first time in head-to-head history. All members of the SUNY Oswego Women’s Lacrosse team were given city pins.
SUNY Oswego’s Tennis team was also honored for winning the Empire 8 championship, an intercollegiate athletic conference affiliated with the NCAA’s Division III. The team was also given city pins. Tyler Glowaki, coach of both Men’s and Women’s tennis teams, commends his team and the city for their accomplishments.
Corradino gave his mayor’s report. During it he spoke about his attendance at the One City, One Campus, One Community event. He also announced that the Street Light Conversion project started on May 12th on West 1st Street. He encouraged Oswego residents to attend the Lake Ontario Waterfront Festival this Saturday, noon – 4 pm.
