OSWEGO, NY – An Oswego councilor suggested the city start looking now at what to do with several parking spaces currently leased by the college. The spots are north of Washington Boulevard on Sixth Avenue.
In 1996, the city owned these parking spots and needed a way of some sorts for the water and sewer line that they were putting through, Councilor Mike Todd said recently.
“The college owned the land, they went to the city and asked for parking spots in return for the easement to go in and do the work and the city received somewhere between 15 and 20 thousand,” he said..
“In 2016 on January 1, they will revert back to the city. It appears to be a pretty good revenue source that the college has. Best numbers we can figure, if there were just 200 of them rented out for a year it’s going to be between $75,000 and $100,000,” he said.
He thinks the city should look at leasing them out when it gets them back in 2016.
“And, I think we should be looking at them as a revenue source And doing it now will give us roughly 13 months to implement this so that when the revert back to us that we can start selling those parking spots each year and getting $100,000 towards revenue that we can use toward renovating neighborhoods and taking down some dilapidated buildings,” he said.
Ron Kaplewicz said he has looked at the area in question and “it is very apparent that it says parking by permit only, signs posted by the college, and we all know those parking permits for college students don’t come free of charge,” he said.
“We want to find out more about what’s going on there,” he added.
“It is potentially a significant source of revenue.”
The city will continue to monitor the situation and be ready to have a plan in place prior to Jan. 1, 2016, he said.
