OSWEGO, NY – For the better part of his life, Andy Pawlenko used his talents to help others and bring joy into their lives.
The well-known bluegrass musician of Hannibal lost his battle with prostate cancer in September 2007. He was just 74.
Thanks to his daughter, his spirit of giving lives on and his music won’t fade from memory.
In 2008, Deanna Hubbard of Hannibal created a CD, called “Out Behind The Barn,†from a recording her father made.
She then created copies of the disc and sold them for $12 apiece through Scott Building Supply in Hannibal, Raby’s Ace Hardware in Oswego and at McCarthy’s tavern on Tallman Street, her father’s old stomping grounds in Oswego.

On Feb. 3, she donated the proceeds to the Charlie and Mary Haney Cancer Giving Fund of Oswego County, which helps pay for cancer treatments for county residents who do not have health insurance.
She presented a check for $1,833 to Dr. Jonathan Wright, medical director of the office (who treated her dad), and Steven Thomas, RN, nurse administrator, at the Hematology Oncology office at Oswego Hospital, run by University Hospital.
Her father would have said, “Holy crap! We’re rich, let’s put a deposit down on a new truck!” she said laughing. “I can just hear him,”
“My goal was $500,” she said. “I did that in like the first day. I was very shocked.”
Charlie and Mary Haney started the fund about eight years ago, Dr. Wright said.
Hubbard’s donation was the largest to the fund since the Haneys established it, Thomas said.

In early February, President of the Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Nick Canale announced the chamber’s current executive director, Jennifer Hill, had tendered her resignation. She left to pursue other career goals.
“Since coming on board as executive director in 2003 Jennifer has done an excellent job,†said Canale.
While Hill’s contributions were appreciated and would be missed, Canale said that the board of directors had formed a search committee and was actively looking for a new executive director.
At its Feb. 9 meeting, the Oswego Common Council announced the city and the police department had come to terms on a new contract.
After a brief executive session, the council voted unanimously to approve a new contract with the police department.
The officers had been (without a new contract) working under the terms of the expired contract since the end of 2006.
The new three-year deal was retroactive to Jan. 1, 2007, and runs through the end of 2009.
The Captains of Police was the last bargaining unit still without a contract right now. Historically, they receive a similar package as the officers.
On Feb. 20, officials at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fulton and representatives of Oswego Health issued a joint statement regarding a pact between the two organizations.
According to Richard Abbott, A.L. Lee Memorial Hospital’s chairman of the Board of Directors and Richard Fiese, DMD, the chair of Oswego Health’s board:
“We want you to be among the first to know that A.L. Lee Memorial Hospital and Oswego Health, with the support of the New York State Department of Health, have agreed to collaborate to ensure that urgent care and other outpatient services will continue to be provided in Fulton.”
The Berger Commission had required that Lee Memorial Hospital close no later than June 30, 2009.
Upon the cessation of all healthcare services by Lee Memorial, Oswego Health will assume responsibility for providing urgent care and outpatient services to the Fulton community.
Qualified physicians and nurses will staff an urgent care center to treat acute, but non-life threatening, illnesses and injuries.
Until that time, programs and essential services will continue at Lee Memorial, the two officials said.
“As we are in the early stages of developing an implementation plan, we are unable to provide full and complete details at this time. However, we pledge to keep you and our entire Oswego County community informed,” Abbott and Fiese said in their statement.
