OSWEGO, NY – Oswego City School District voters will be going to the polls on May 17 from noon to 9 p.m. at 10 polling places spread throughout the district.
District Clerk Bill Foley noted, “This year the voters in the fifth district or fifth ward in Oswego will be not be voting at the Kingsford Park Elementary School. Due to the ongoing capital project work that is under way in the school voters will be casting their ballots at the Cullinan Ice Rink, located directly behind Kingsford Park Elementary School.”
That will be the only change as the other polling places include the McCrobie Building (first district), Fitzhugh Park Elementary School (second district), Frederick Leighton Elementary School (third district), Education Center (fourth district), Charles E. Riley Elementary School (sixth district), the Oswego Middle School music room (seventh district), Minetto Elementary School , Oswego Town Hall and the Scriba Fire Station Hall.
The view of the voting booth machine will be crowded with three propositions and election of members to the Oswego City School District Board of Education as well as the City Library Board.
Proposition One will be the vote on the 2011-2012 Oswego City School District budget.
This year’s proposed budget of $74,744,748 is $103,297 less than this year’s current budget.
The Board of Education and the school district administration also was able to maintain the tax levy level as there is no increase in the tax levy for the proposed budget.
The spending plan was unanimously approved by the members of the board of education for presentation to the community.
Proposition Two will involve the replacement of buses for the Oswego City School District.
Proposed will be the purchase of eight 66-passenger school buses as well as one 34-passenger bus and another 34-passenger bus with a wheelchair lift.
Approximately two-thirds of the $988,000 cost of the buses will be returned to the district in the form of transportation aid.
Three people will be seated on the board of education at the reorganizational meeting in July.
Seeking one of the three positions on the Oswego City School District Board of Education are incumbent John Dunsmoor, William Myer, Jean Parker, Lynda Sereno and incumbent Samuel Tripp.
William “Dave” White, a two-term member of the board, elected not to seek a third three-year term.
Voters will also be voting on an increase for the Oswego School District Public Library budget and the selection of a library trustee.
The only person submitting interest in serving on the library board was Kathleen Mantaro.
Each area home and business will be receiving the annual budget newsletter in the week before the vote.
Foley said, “If you do not receive a budget newsletter please call 341-2020 to request one. The budget newsletter will also be on the Oswego City School District website (www.oswego.org) with a variety of other information including a copy of the entire budget, video presentations relating to the budget and the school report cards.”
