ORWELL, NY – An Oswego man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly causing injuries to an infant last month.

Jerrid M. Walts, 19, of 9 Chase Drive, Oswego, was charged with a class-D felony count of reckless assault of a child.

According to a report from the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office, Walts’ arrest stemmed from an investigation that revealed he allegedly caused injuries to a three-month-old female while she was in his care at her home in the town of Orwell July 30.

Oswego County Sheriff Reuel Todd said that the child was hospitalized when the case opened.

“I believe this was reported to us by the hospital,” Todd said. He noted that Walts is related to the baby.

“We’ve been investigating this ever since,” Todd explained. “Yesterday, we believed we had enough information through the hospital and the investigation to arrest Mr. Walts for assaulting the child.”

Walts was arraigned before the Hon. Luther Dennison, Hannibal Town Court, and remanded to the Oswego County Correctional Facility in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bail bond. He remained in custody this morning, according to a spokesperson from the sheriff’s office.

The baby has since been released from the hospital.

“Whether she will have any long-term injuries because of the assault, I don’t know,” Todd added.

Walts is scheduled to answer the charge before Orwell Town Court Aug. 27. missing or outdated ad config
