OSWEGO – Five Central New York paddlers, including former Oswego County Planning Director Ed Marx, traveled water routes from Ithaca to Oswego, arriving on Sunday, to demonstrate the potential for developing a water trail that links the Finger Lakes with Lake Ontario.
Dick Drosse of the Oswego County Environmental Management Council paddled with the group from Indian Point to Fulton and Minetto.
In addition to Marx (Commissioner of Planning for Tompkins County), the group included Andrew Zepp, Executive Director of the Finger Lakes Land Trust; Chris Olney, Director of Stewardship of the Finger Lakes Land Trust; Geoff Milz, Senior Planner for Cayuga County; and Sue Poelvoorde, Senior Natural Resources Planner for New York State Parks.
The group said they enjoyed their trip, including the history and historic areas of the Oswego River to Oswego.
They stopped first at Great Bear on Saturday to enjoy the natural beauty of its resources.
Meeting with the River View Park volunteers in Minetto, Marx was able to view and comment on how nicely the park has developed since his work in gaining a grant to construct it when he was Planning Director for Oswego County.
The paddlers left July 18 from Ithaca at the south end of Cayuga Lake, entered the Erie Canal on the Seneca River at the north end of Cayuga Lake and then the Oswego River Canal at Three Rivers.
They paddled approximately 20 miles per day.
The group finished up Sunday at Wright’s Landing where they had a barbecue.
Oswego Mayor Tom Gillen visited the group and endorsed the potential for developing a water trail that links the Finger Lakes with Lake Ontario, utilizing the Seneca and Oswego rivers.
