Parents Of Special Children To Meet Tuesday

FULTON, NY – Parents of Special Children has recently coordinated a group called Autism Connections.

Group facilitator Theresa Familo said, “We’re providing an opportunity for families who have children (young or adult) on the Autism Spectrum to connect with each other.”

Autism is a spectrum disorder and it affects each individual differently and at varying degrees.

Members of the group enjoy having a comfortable place to get together and discuss life with Autism.

Group member Sally Downs said, “It’s so nice to know that you’re not alone.”

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disability which is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain.

People with Autism typically have difficulties with social interactions, communication skills, and leisure / play activities.

Discussions vary depending on the needs of the group, but typically range from behavior issues, sibling relationships, educational programs, family networking, and community relations.

Familo said, “as understanding and loving family and friends are, sometimes I just need to talk with someone who’s going through the same things…both the joys and the sorrows.”

The group meets the first Tuesday of each month at Parents of Special Children’s office at 2 Tower Drive, Fulton.

However, taking place of the July and August meetings will be family functions.

On Tuesday, July 1, members of the group, along with their families, will be gathering at the Oswego County Fair’s “A Special Time for Special People” from 2 – 5 p.m.

In August, the group, and their families, will be joining each other at Fair Haven State Park to swim and play on the playground.

People affected by Autism are welcome to join us at any time.
