UPDATE: Neighbor Arrested for Apartment Fire

UPDATE, 9:00 P.M. TUESDAY: Oswego Police arrested the person who lives in another apartment at 211 E. Eighth St. and charged him with setting the fire inside apartment 1.

John M. Coughlin, 61, of apartment 2 was arrested at about 5:10 p.m. Tuesday.  Police charged him with arson and burglary.  He was also charged with obstructing governmental administration.  Police alleged he physically interfered with the investigation.

Police allege he went into the apartment without permission and set the fire.  They did not offer information as to why they believe he did it.

Coughlin was sent to the Oswego County Correctional Facility on bail of $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond.

He is to appear in Oswego City Court on Sept. 28.

OSWEGO, NY – At about 5:23 p.m. Monday, the Oswego City Fire Department responded with the Oswego City Police Department to a reported structure fire at 211 E. Eighth St.

Upon arrival, fire crews determined that there was a small fire in the lower apartment of the two story dwelling.

The fire was quickly extinguished with limited fire and smoke damage and no reports of injuries.

Oswego City Police Department investigators, working in conjunction with the Oswego City Fire Department personnel are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire and are attempting to determine a cause.

Investigators at the scene have indicated that from the preliminary investigation, the fire does appear to be suspicious.
