OSWEGO, NY – Parents will never forget April 20, 1999, as that was the day of the tragic shootings at Columbine High School.
Oswego students and parents will have a unique opportunity on Oct. 19 as “Rachel’s Challenge†will come to Oswego.
This program is based on the inspiring and courageous story of Rachel Scott, the first person killed at Columbine High School.
Rachel’s acts of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become the foundation of one of the most life-changing school programs in America.
She wanted to start a chain reaction of kindness and caring and believed her life would impact the world.
Darrell Scott, Rachel’s dad, created a non-profit organization to “motivate, educate and bring positive change to many young people.â€Â
He and members of his family tour North American bringing Rachel’s message as a means of preventing teen violence.
Through a grant funded by the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, written in collaboration with the Oswego City Schools, Oswego County Opportunities Youth Services and Farnham Family Services, “Rachel’s Challenge†will come to Oswego High School.
During the day, there will be two student assemblies, but the community will also be able to take part in the event as a program will also be held beginning at 7 p.m.
Rachel’s Challenge won’t eliminate bullying and school violence, but there is that desire to make a change, make a difference and students as well as the community can become involved in this effort on Monday evening.
