OSWEGO, NY – With the issue of school safety on every parents mind, the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County has partnered with the Oswego City School District, the Oswego County Department of Social Services, the Huntington Family Centers of Syracuse and the Oswego County Child Protection Advisory Council to offer a community forum on the subject.

Entitled, Safety In Our Schools, the community forum, hosted by the OCSD, will be held January 10 at 6 p.m. in the Oswego High School media center.

The forum will cover a number of aspects related to children’s safety including harm reduction and violence prevention strategies in the home, school, and community.

“We know that children’s exposure to violence and abuse is a concern not only in our communities, but across the country,” said Karrie Damm, executive director of the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County.  “We invite parents, guardians, and concerned community members to attend this informative and educational forum that will focus on the multidisciplinary systems in place that respond to child abuse allegations and what can be done at home as well as in school to promote and maximize the safety of our children.”

Damm added that one of the goals of the Safety In Our Schools forum is to enhance the lines of communication between parents / guardians and school representatives and between youth and their parents / guardians.

“Communication is one of the most important tools in addressing safety in our schools.  We welcome feedback from our community members and I encourage parents / guardians of school age youth to be an active part of the Safety In Our Schools forum,” she said.
