OSWEGO, NY – It was a tale of two months all rolled into 30 days.
The first part of September 2009 was relatively mild like it should be; while the last several days were rainy and cold like an early spring month, noted Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service.
The average temperature was 60.3 degrees. That is 1.7 degrees below where it should be.
The highest temperature was 78 degrees on the 23rd and the lowest was 36 degrees on the 20th.
“That was the first time we were in the 30s since March or April, Gregway said.
There were no records last month. However, the 36 degrees was a near record, almost reaching the record of 35 degrees for that date back in 1993, he added.
September had 13 days where the high was 70 or above, including a string from the 2nd through the 11th.
There were 10 days where the mercury was stuck in the 40s and one day in the 30s.
Total precipitation for September (3.03 inches) was “way down,” (1.14 inches below normal) according to Gregway.
There were 7 days of measurable precipitation, 4 were consecutive.
Just a trace was recorded on 3 days.
No precipitation fell on 20 days with streaks of 11, 4 and 3 days in a row.
The greatest precipitation in a 24-hour period was 1.25 inches on the 27th.
“We went from nothing in the first 11 days of the month to a trace on the 12th and then got it all at once the last few days of the month,” Gregway observed. “From the 22nd on, there was a real change in the weather.”
Total precipitation since the first of the year at the end of September stands at 28.15 inches. That is 2.74 inches below average.
“We didn’t get any snow last month,” Gregway said. “The average for September is a trace.”
The number of cloudy days, 10, was normal.
The number of partly cloudy days, 14, was 4 above normal.
The number of clear days, 6, was 4 below normal.
September saw 2 thunderstorms, which is 1 below average.
There was 1 foggy day last month, which is average.
“We really didn’t have much wind last month until just the last 4 or 5 days,” Gregway said.
The strongest winds were west-northwesterly, greater than 25 mph on the 24th. There were 4 other time when the winds were around 20 mph, Gregway added.
The highest barometric pressure was 30.43 on the 10th and the lowest was 29.27 on the 28th.
“We had a lot of high pressure early in the month that gave us the mild and dry weather,” Gregway said.
The warmest September is 1881 (71.0 degrees) and the coolest is 1896 (50.6 degrees).
September 1975 is the wettest on record (7.55 inches) and 1844 is the driest (0.54-inch).
The highest temperature recorded in September is 96 degrees on the 4th in 1953. The lowest (30 degrees) was recorded twice – on the 24th in 1963 and on the 20th in 1991.
