PHOENIX, NY – The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office has reported two unrelated marijuana growing arrests in the town of Schroeppel.
Both Paul D. Calderwood, 53, of 250 Barnard Rd. in Phoenix and Robert T. Holden, 55, of 271 Barnard Rd. in Phoenix were arrested on Tuesday, August 30 for “unlawfully growing marijuana,” on properties in the town of Schroeppel after a Border Patrol helicopter sighted the marijuana from the air, according to Oswego County Undersheriff, Eugene Sullivan.
Calderwood was charged with Criminal Possession of Marijuana in the second degree, a class “D” felony and Unlawful Growing of Marijuana, a class “A” misdemeanor.
Holden was charged with Criminal Possession of Marijuana in the first degree, a class “C” felony, and Unlawful Growing of Marijuana, a class “A” misdemeanor.
Sullivan explained that the difference in charges stemmed from the weight of marijuana seized.
After drying and weighing, Calderwood was found to be in possession of just under four pounds of marijuana. Likewise, Holden was found to be in possession of more than 11 pounds of marijuana, Sullivan explained.
“They were completely unrelated charges, it just so happened that Border Patrol was able to identify two separate grows across the street from each other,” Sullivan said.
This is around the time of year Border Patrol will begin doing routine air checks as fall is typical harvest time for marijuana growth, however, this case was rare in that an arrest was able to be made immediately following the find, according to Sullivan.
He explained that Border Patrol was able to attach a body to the find and immediately called the report in to the Sheriff’s Office who was able to dispatch to the reported scene and found Calderwood “tending to his product,” said Sullivan.
Both men were released on their own recognizance and are scheduled to appear in Town of Schroeppel Court on September 28.
