OSWEGO, NY – Oh, no. No Oswego Uno record.
Somewhere, in West Virginia, 330 people probably breathed a collective sigh of relief recently.
An attempt spearheaded by the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau and the Oswego YMCA (along with others) to set a new world record for the largest Uno missed the mark by 131 people.
That’s not bad, organizers said, considering about 200 gathered at the Oswego YMCA Armory.
“Over all, it was a success,” explained Brian Chetney, a Youth Services Specialist with the Youth Bureau. “It was a huge community event. Getting the record would have been great, but the purpose was to give families something positive to do together.”
The field was narrowed down over a couple of rounds until one table of competitors remained.
When the dust had settled, Lori Pritchard hoisted the huge trophy.
“This is my first time playing in a tournament,” she said. “We play for fun all the time around the kitchen table.”
She told her friends that she didn’t know where the trophy was going to be displayed. However, she proclaimed, “This is the first of many Uno trophies I’m going to win, I’ll have you know.”
Anne Ahrens jokingly chided her friend, “Aren’t you glad I talked you into coming now?”
“What do you mean? I’m the one who made you come here,” Pritchard replied.
Besides the Youth Bureau and YMCA, Novelis and Reality Check helped organize the world record attempt.
Cam’s NY Pizzeria supplied a few dozen large pizzas and music was provided by Good Time Entertainment.
