OSWEGO, NY – The need for blood donors is always critical.
During the holidays, the need much more pronounced.
As the director of the Oswego County branch of the American Red Cross, Karen Ferguson tries to educate the public as to the constant need for the “gift of life.”
However, recently she experienced the need from another point of view.
“Last week, I experienced personally the importance of giving,” she said.
Several weeks ago, her niece’s baby was born slightly premature.
After some scary, “but not too serious, moments,” he was released to go home with mom and dad.
“After a couple of weeks at home they noticed something just wasn’t right and he was rushed to Golisano Children’s Hospital,” she said.
“After some tests, it was determined that the little guy needed a blood transfusion,” Ferguson continued. “Upon hearing this I immediately thanked God for each and every blood donor we have, because without these wonderful donors this little guy may not have made it.”
He is now home and doing well, “But just thinking about what could have happened is too sad,” she added.
It is getting closer to the holiday season and people are all very busy, Ferguson said.
“Before the rush starts in full, I would ask you to please consider giving at one of the two blood drives coming up later this month,” she said.
The first blood drive will be held on Nov. 20 at the American Red Cross office, 333 W. First St., Oswego, 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
And the other will be Nov. 25 at the Elks Club, West Fifth and Bridge streets, 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Everyone who donates at either of these drives will receive a coupon for a free pizza from Cam’s Pizzeria.
“If you have never given before, I encourage you to try. If you haven’t given in a while, I ask you to please schedule an appointment,” Ferguson said. “And, if you are a regular donor, I thank you.”

They will be taking walk-ins as they fit into the schedule; but an appointment is highly suggested, Ferguson said.
